How to Help Your Child Avoid Cavities
Cavities form when excess bacteria and acids are left on teeth for a prolonged amount of time. If food particles and sugar are not cleaned away from teeth, a sticky substance called plaque will form. Over time, the acid from plaque will begin to soften or demineralize the enamel of the tooth.
Fortunately, advanced digital x-rays can detect demineralization between teeth before it becomes decay. Patients can then take extra measures between checkups to floss and brush, and possibly reverse the demineralization process. Depending upon where decay forms, cavities, also known as dental caries, will most likely need to be filled. Grosso Orthodontics offers some tips on how to help your child avoid cavities:
- Brush twice a day and floss regularly
- Keep up with regular dental visits every 6 months
- Limit sugary foods and drinks
- Get enough fluoride through drinking water and fluoride toothpaste
Grosso Orthodontics is pleased to offer dental sealants to help protect primary teeth and permanent molars from decay. Dental sealants are a protective coating that is painted on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Sealants can be an effective way to help reduce decay for pediatric patients.
